Do you have style in your writing?

Writing is not something that comes natural to most people.

But Charles Bukowski has a very unique writing style, and take on writers.

If you haven’t heard of him or read his writings before, you are in for a treat (or shock)…

“He asked, “What makes a man a writer?” charles-bukowski

“Well,” I said, “it’s simple. You either get it down on paper, or jump off a bridge.”

~Charles Bukowski

“When I begin to doubt my ability to work the word, I simply read another writer and know I have nothing to worry about.

My contest is only with myself, to do it right, with power, and force, and delight, and gamble.” ~Charles Bukowski

“the writing of some men
is like a vast bridge
that carries you over
the many things
that claw and tear.

The Wine of Forever” ~ Charles Bukowski, Love is a Dog from Hell

“Writers are desperate people and when they stop being desperate they stop being writers.”

“When a writer is swayed with his fame and his fortune, you can float him down the river with the turds.” charles-bukowski

“Writing is something that you don’t know how to do. You sit down and it’s something that happens, or it may not happen. So, how can you teach anybody how to write? It’s beyond me, because you yourself don’t even know if you’re going to be able to.”

“It was a joy! Words weren’t dull, words were things that could make your mind hum.”

“Some people have written that my writing has helped them go on.
It has helped me too. The writing, the roses, the 9 cats.”

Style is the answer to everything
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous
To do a dull thing with style is preferable
to doing a dangerous thing without it
To do a dangerous thing with style, is what
I call art

Bullfighting can be an art
Boxing can be an art
Loving can be an art
Opening a can of sardines can be an art

Not many have style
Not many can keep style
I have seen dogs with more style than men
Although not many dogs have style
Cats have it with abundance

When Hemingway put his brains
to the wall with a shotgun, that was style
For sometimes people give you style
Joan of Arc had style
John the Baptist
García Lorca

I have met men in jail with style
I have met more men in jail with style
than men out of jail
Style is a difference, a way of doing,
a way of being done

Six herons standing quietly in a pool of water,
or you, walking out of the bathroom without seeing me

[—————-Quotes from current Story Sellers—————-]
“I love the enforcement of storytelling where I got much more clarity on how to use that as a tool and also how to incorporate it into my writing. I also liked that you covered subject lines and headlines too, very helpful.”
Susan Friesen,

“You not only gave us a six week webinar, but a lifetime worth of subjects and ideas with a creative outlet to cherish for a lifetime. I got so exited about writing, I hate the days now, that I don’t sit down and write. I will miss the webinars enormously. I always looked forward to the next class.”
Ghislaine Cleiren, MANON’S & LEONIDAS Chocolates

“Its really a must do for anyone in marketing, marketing communications, advertising or copywriting. And especially anyone running a small business. I wish I had taken something like this 4 years ago when I started PhotoArt People. The 31K idea was worth the price of admission alone.”
William Loeber, PhotoArt People

Or, rather, writing is not something that comes NATURALLY to most people.

  2. You are right Terry Lee.

It sure wasn’t natural for me…I failed every English class I ever took in grade school and university.

But when I left the corporate world 10 years ago, I took the learning of writing to heart.

    I wrote…lots.
I studied how to write better, I hired writing coaches.
I knew that writing was it for marketing, and I was determined to turn an un-natural writer into a learned writer. My writing still needs lots of work, but it good enough to make many millions of dollars formy clients.

Anyone and everyone can learn to be a writer.

    And they should.

We live in a content driven world, writing is key for communication.

Very few people are born natural writers… But that doesn’t mean you or I can’t become excellent at it.

    Find a coach or mentor.

Buy and study some books on writing.

Take it serious and your business WILL grow…I guarantee it.

    Great to hear from you.

Jeez, Troy, I was just googling myself for the heck of it (anything to stop the urge to smoke) and came across your reply! Sorry I’m more than a month late in responding.

You certainly can write! Hard to believe writing doesn’t come NATURALLY to you, Troy. Great job.

Didn’t mean to nit-pic but I’m a nit-picker. Brilliant of you to use Charles Bukowski quotes as motivation. But, I could swear, writing came to that man naturally.

Anyway, thanks for the response and best wishes in your business affairs.

  4. Thanks Terry Lee. Good to hear back from you. I would agree with your thoughts on Bukowski…a brilliant writer that is a rare example of someone born with the ability. As for the rest of us, writing lots helps some. Maybe not enough to be like him, but to find our own personality in print is good.

I just celebrated my 10 years smoke-free the other day! Keep at it and take it day by day. And busyness helps :0)

Thanks again for the kind words. Troy
