My spooky screw up and some lessons to grow your business

Over the past couple months, I’ve been working in a different niche and head space.

Sadly, I neglected sharing my marketing insights with
you during that time.

But, boy-oh-boy did I learn some powerful things I
wanted to share.


First, ALWAYS follow your intuition!

How many times I’ve ignored that nagging gut feeling in
pursuit of the all might money!

I shudder to think.

In this case, I had warning signs FARRRR in advance of
going head-first into this adventure… but I ignored

It cost me $, it cost me far too much stress, and it
cost me some goodwill with YOU that I fully plan on
earning back.

ALWAYS follow your intuition – and back it up with some
checking the facts, but let your intuition guide you
through those tough decisions.

If I had followed mine, I would have saved 2 months of


Second, when plunging into new jv products or
partnerships, double check if your EGOS are in line
with each other.

Ego has a funny way of getting in the way of success.

In this same example, if I had done a little more
advance ego-checking, I would have seen the proof that
my intuition was right.

Just because surface level stuff says one thing,
doesn’t mean your new partners ego won’t get in the way
of trying and succeeding at things that could’ve been
wildly successful.
Third, B2B is no different than B2C – just because you
couldn’t/didn’t make it work before – doesn’t mean it
doesn’t work for others.

I’ve done some great B2B campaigns that got wicked-good
response rates (one of them got an 18% conversion rate
from a COLD list!

All C-level buyers – never heard from the client before
– using a 2 page black and white letter – no logos to
be found – entire campaign told a STORY – not the B2B
facts most companies spew out).

The best part? The 18% response rate came with
COMPLIMENTS from the prospects.

We received NUMEROUS emails, phone calls, and even
letters thanking US for such a unique, and welcome,

B2B does not mean you hide behind a company – some of
the greatest and most successful companies in the world
have a personality at the core – NOT A LOGO.


Four, always be prepared to listen to others – your
opinion ISN’T always right and they may have something
very profitable to share!

Just because something didn’t work for you in the past
– doesn’t mean it won’t work for you now – you just did
it wrong in the past.


Last, don’t be afraid to FAIL, and FAIL FAST!

The last thing you want to do when something is turning
ugly on you is to ‘stick it out’.

Especially when the intuition is telling you the
opposite, the egos involved are clashing, and the
ability to see things from all sides has become murky.



As the great Michael Jordan shares in this quote: “I’ve
missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost
almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take
the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and
over and over again in my life. And that is why I


Failure is not to be shunned – it’s a GOOD THING.
The more you fail, the more you succeed.

This applies in face-to-face sales, it applies in
online marketing, it applies in offline marketing.

This applies in sports. In learning. In improving
yourself and your situation.


And fail fast and furious, while you’re at it.

It develops thick skin – and positions you for

Twins turning teens – yikes

I’ve been blogging for 8 years and writing my newsletter for 11 years now – wow!

In that time, I’ve shared the trials and tribulations of
raising twins – raising twin girls – and being a single parent
of twin girls.

You may even remember my marketing ‘makeover’ article if you’ve
been with me for some time – complete with photos of me in
makeup and hair barrettes after a fun filled day with
my daughters.

They are fantastic kids and I wanted to share with you some
pics and an article about them (including the article I sent
to Jay Abraham 11 years ago about them – which he actually
distributed in his newsletter back then).

A dedication to my daughters on their 13th birthday

Today, my daughters turn 13.

How in the hell did THAT happen?

Amazing how fast 13 years can go by… and how fast I can turn grey (coincidence?).

As you may well know, my twin 13 yr old daughters are everything to me.

They were brought into this world at a whopping 3 pounds each, and have turned into incredible young teenagers with the world in their hands.  In honor of their birthday today, I thought it only fair to dedicate today’s article to them!

Without them, I may have never taken the plunge to start my own business.

I did NOT want to be that dad that hated what he did for a living… so I quit my sales job and started my own business. 

Best thing I ever did for myself… and for them.

The day those 2 came into my life was the greatest day I can ever remember.

Katrina and Hailey were born 2 months premature and weighed in at 3pds each.

Yet, they carried the power of the universe in those tiny little hands. The first time I held one I will never forget (look at your hands when I talk about this to get the full impression) – their entire hands wrapped around my middle fingertip – their entire hand wrapped around my first knuckle.

So small, yet so many miracles at work within them.

They are now 13 years old and you would never know they were born so small or frail.

The power of love, nutrition and all the TLC possible brought them from where they were all bundled up in their incubators at the hospital to where they are today – terrorizing the cats, the neighbors kids and the local supply of purple balloons (one of their favorites).

Pretty well through most of this time I was also building my own small business and I quickly learned how many similarities there are to raising kids as there are to raising a business. You have to learn to crawl before walking, and walking before running.

There are no shortcuts (every once in a while you do hear of someone that broke the “rules” but it is more common than not to have to follow the rules.

Being twins, they also have some unique qualities and situations that remind me of marketing my business. Making my business different than others is very important to me and I am always working on new ways to get better at it.

What struck me most though was how powerful we truly are when we look to a higher power for help. Those tiny little 3 pound babies were put on this earth for a reason (and neither of us have twins in the family, so it was a complete surprise).

They are as strong as any other 12 year old, yet they started out at a serious disadvantage.

When you look to a higher power for help – you will receive what you ask for. As long as you trust and believe that it will come. When those 2 were born – all I asked for was health.

As long as they were healthy – I was happy.

And I got what I asked for because I KNEW deep inside that they were healthy – and would continue to be so.

With my business, I have asked for help numerous times. Many times I got what I asked for. Other times I didn’t. When I look back on why some things didn’t happen as I had asked for – it was mainly because I was not trusting that it would happen. Those times when I knew deep to the core that it would happen – it did.

My advice to you is – when you ask for help – believe they will help and trust that it will come in due time. But, do not sit back and wait for it. Go out and actively go in search of your dreams as well.

It gives the universe many more outlets to help you with when you are already helping yourself.

December 2002 in LA was one of the defining moments in my life.  Over the period of 3 information packed days my thoughts on business and success dramatically.  When I got home I looked at the thousands of pages of information I had to read, 80 hours + in audio tapes to listen to…my year was filling up!

So… every chance I had to listen to the tapes I did.

Until last week…

I have twin 2 year old girls and they were on the fast track to be the youngest Jay Abraham Protégés ever !  They listened to the tapes every time they were in the car with me… and for the most part they seemed to quite enjoy it!

I thought I was a genius… raising marketing masterminds from birth!  By the time they were 12 years old I would be able to retire on their consulting contracts.  This was sounding great.

My dreams were dashed the other day when I was putting in another tape while the girls were in the car.   As the tape started there was a huge outburst from the back …. “NO more Jay Abraham!”  Hailey screamed.  I thought she was kidding, I mean how could she be getting tired of here education already?

Well, sorry to say… they no longer let me play the Jay Abraham tapes when they are in the car.  I get the same, very rude, outburst whenever I try them on the tapes.

My bubble has temporarily burst for the youngest protégés ever.

I am going to try again when they turn 3.

My Chem Teacher didn’t COOK Meth… he smoked it!

Breaking bad had 10.3 million people tune in to watch the series finale.

The last season had 300% more viewers than the previous year.

All about a Chem teacher gone bad… and a knack for cooking Meth that’s the best in the world.

I personally LOVED the white breaking bad

Bryan Cranston played Walter White (not my father, or even a remote relative, if you must ask)

He was flipping BRILLIANT at this role.

Who’d have thunk it that the dad from Malcolm in the Middle would play such an AWESOME bad guy, tough guy, and all around monster meth cook?

Not me!

I was wrong on that…

…but I’m right on one thing.

My Chem teacher smoked crack.

I swear he did!


Caveat: I was a weeeee bit of a shithead in school.

Barely passed high school (was averaging 49% or less in some of my classes until finals. Somehow, someway, I pulled one out of my arse and aced them. How I did it is for another time. All that matters is that I did… and didn’t get caught 🙂

During those high school days I had a Chem teacher who HATED ME.

Mr Roberts thought I was the spawn of Satan (hey, maybe it was the hallucinations from the meth?).

In fact, he told me I would… get this… “Pump Gas for the rest of my life”.


Only for 6 months… thank you very much Mr Roberts, you ass!

Yes, I pumped gas… in minus 30.

Got me to get it together and go back to school – ultimately ending up with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (who knew partying and business school went so well together? I figured it out and managed to do ok at it).

So, good old Mr Roberts, deep inside his meth-induced haze, thought I would be a gas jockey forever.


Not anymore…

Now adays I get to help entrepreneurs build businesses that make them moola.

Some of them make drug-dealer/meth-cooker kinda money (like Chris V – who’s making a very healthy 7 figures a year in his lifestyle-built business).

Others make nice chunks of change – more in a month than Mr Roberts (the meth-smoking-ass) made in a year!

All that matters is that he was wrong and I was right.

Oh – and that there ARE systems out there that help YOU make a bundle online.

Skunk, porcupine, and deer: my favorite breakfast foods


Nothing like a little bit of pungent skunk, with a poke 
from a porcupine, and a spook from a deer to start a guys 

As much as I would like to claim I’m a manly man and eat 
that for breakfast…


But… I do see them all early mornings.

As you may know (or may not, if you’re not paying 
attention or new to my newsletter)… I like to get 
out and be active.

Been in the martial arts for 13 years.

Do my interval and weight training at 5:30 am (great 
way to start the day!).

And I walk the furball religiously every morning before 
getting busy.

My morning walk is often down in the wooded-wonderland 
in Calgary called Fish Creek.

Fish Creek is one of the largest urban parks in Canada, 
and has every kind of wildlife you can imagine.

The other day, Casino (my furry marketing assistant) 
was all wagging his tail and stuff in the dark 
(always a sign of trouble to come).

Lo and behold… a MONSTER porcupine was trapped by my 
not-so-intelligent friend.

LUCKY for him… I got him out of there before 300 quills 
poked his eyes, lips, tongue, and some other parts he may 
not of enjoyed too.skunk

Last week – a skunk.

Pretty well daily, we see a deer that scares the bejesus 
out of us as it jumped in front of us on a dark pathway.

Needless to say it gets the heart fired up and the 
adrenaline flowing!

Which is my point…

YOU need a ritual.

A daily ritual.

One that first you up and empowers your profits.

I love exercise to start my day.

I also love writing – every word of which is an asset 
to my business and marketing.
