Cracking the Google Code

I had the pleasure of talking with Dafne Canales Lees about Google, SEO, and how to legitimately start rising up to the top of Google.

Here is the recording and the incredible top 10 list that you need to know…

If website traffic and lead generation is important to you (it should be!) then make sure you invest the time to watch this recording.

My site gets beat up on during this call, and the information she shared with me was truly awesome!

Wish I knew about this a decade ago when I first went online.

Let me know your thoughts.

The Belly Dancing Google master (free SEO training Tuesday)

A few years ago I was hosting my Wild West Wealth Summit and I met
Dafne Canales Lees. She had come to the event to pick up on some
marketing ideas, and has gone on to do some magnificent things in
her own marketing.

First, she applied the marketing to her Bellydance academy and did
some AWESOME things that got her on local tv shows many times and
several full page features in prominent newspapers. Her Bellydance
academy classes were always full with classes running 5 days a
week, she charged double what her competitors charged and ended up
hiring and training 12 other instructors to meet demand.

But get this… with absolutely no advertising except for having a
website that was fully optimized for the search engines.

Quietly in the background, her husband Bernie was mastering the SEO
game. They launched Spartan6 with a BANG… and they smartly
leveraged the bellydancing background with SEO expertise and the
Spartan6 girls became a media magnet too.

SEO is not exactly a sexy thing – but monster traffic from Google
sure can be!

(dressing up some beautiful belly dancers like Spartans sure
doesn’t hurt either!)

Tuesday, Dafne is going to be sharing their Cracking the
Google Code formula for SEO mastery.

I have peaked at some of their techniques and am shocked at what
things you can do with some minor tweaks to your pages.

(PLUS – I asked Dafne to beat up on MY SITE to show the mistakes
I have made with my lack of SEO knowledge!)

Dafne will be sharing this with us Tues.

Tuesday, October 16
6 pm PST – 7 pm MST – 8 pm CST – 9 pm EST

WARNING: graphic photo illustrates the problem with success

I was out walking my furry marketing assistant Casino at the Dog Park yesterday and saw something that freaked me out.

The sun had just come up, so the crispness of this made it even more creepy.

A dead deer…

…in the dog park?

success and persistenceNot something I was used to seeing (never even seen a deer in the dog park, let alone a dead one).

The dog was freaked out – so was I.

This poor little deer somehow got itself into the park and couldn’t find a way out.

The entire park is fenced off so the dogs can’t go bug the birds, the geese or the ducks.

So this deer finds itself somehow on the wrong side of the fence, and kills itself bashing into the fence trying to get out.

With the amount of blood around the deer, I could only guess it must have been a sad scene while it unfolded.

It cost him his life.

And this same type of action costs most people out there their dreams.

What about you?

You are on my newsletter list to learn about marketing, about copywriting, and about entrepreneurial success.

Maybe you have achieved all your dreams and just like staying in touch…

…or maybe you still have dreams and goals you are pushing for.

Being successful in marketing and sales is about persistence… but also in correcting the course of action along the way too.

Rather than beating yourself up trying to get through that closed door (or fence), maybe a small little alteration to your path could make your journey more enjoyable.

About 300 feet to the left of this poor deer, was a wide open space that would take him to the river bank.

It’s where the dogs can go swim… and it could have saved this deers life if he just tried a different approach.

If you are fed up with constantly trying but never succeeding… maybe its time you try something different?

I’m as persistent as they get… so I have to remind myself too that there ARE easier ways to get things done.

With copywriting, I decided it was time to put my copy to use promoting things for ME – rather than others. I love writing copy – and have done it for 10 years, mainly for others. But 2012 has been a year of change for me so I chose a different path with Marketing Beach Bum and Empower (https://www.marketingbeachbum.com).

I love it – and things are happening FAST.

Why?

Because I turned and went 300 feet to the left instead of constantly beating myself up trying to go the same old way that didn’t work out as I wanted before.

If you ever feel like you are stuck doing the same old same old things with a lack of results – maybe its time YOU walk 300 feet to the left and try a new and different approach.

Persistence killed this deer because he was persisting on the wrong path.

Don’t let it happen to you and your dreams.

There are better ways.

Try them… you might like them.

Have a great day.

One thing I drilled into my head 11 yrs ago today that saved my life

You may have seen my dedication to my daughters on their birthday yesterday…

…but there is one other reason for a party.

11 years ago TODAY I quit smoking.

For my daughters first birthday, I gave them a gift that benefited me just as much…

…to quit smoking once and for all.

I had started smoking at a very young age (14) and loved it at the time.

Its a disgusting habit and once you quit with the right mindset, you really see how bad it is or was.

Numerous failed attempts at quitting with Nicorette, the patch, Zyban… and so on.

Sometimes I would last for a week – sometimes 6 months.

One time I quit for a year and a half – then stupidly started back again.

11 years ago I had a reason to do it once and for all…

…my girls.

I didn’t want them to be fatherless.

I wanted to show them that it IS possible to quit an evil habit like that.

While they never would remember me as a smoker, they know I quit.

That’s what matters to them and to me.

I figure it has saved me at least $40,000 – $50,000 in the last 11 years!

Plus my health.

So how did I do it once and for all?

And what in the heck does this have to do with business?

One thing – BHAG.

Big Hairy Audacious Goals.

Get one.

D-R-I-L-L it into your head.

Don’t allow yourself an “out”.

With smoking… it was a gift I gave my girls.  I couldn’t take it back.

When my mind was intent and switched on… there was NO BACKING DOWN.  NO TAKING IT BACK.

No alternative but to do what I said.

It’s no different in anything in life or in business.

Set your damn mind to it – commit to it verbally and publicly – then DO IT.

I use that philosophy for all kinds of things – my martial arts, quitting smoking, major changes in my personal life this year, writing daily, marketing more aggressively through lead generation, far less television, far less self-sabotage, more fun-based marketing and income generation through my Marketing Beach Bum adventures https://www.marketingbeachbum.com.

I stick to my guns and constantly remind myself what I am doing…

…and WHY I am doing it.

It ain’t easy.

But I consider it do or die.

Drill that kind of pigheadedness into your will to live… and you can accomplish anything you want.

If you are a smoker – find your BHAG – commit to it publicly – then do everything in your power to beat it.

Same goes for anything and everything in your personal and business life.

Last…

…take it one day at a time.

However trite that sounds, it works.

Every day you wake up – remind yourself of your BHAGs and just tackle that ONE DAY.

Wash, rinse and repeat the next day.

And so on.

It’s a proven formula that saved my health in the last 11 years – and is helping me redesign the life I really want.

Maybe it can help you.

Have a great, and smoke-free day!

A dedication to my daughters on their 12th birthday

Today, my daughters turn 12.

Amazing how fast 12 years can go by… and how fast I can turn grey (coincidence?).

As you may well know, my twin 12 yr old daughters are everything to me.

They were brought into this world at a whopping 3 pounds each, and have turned into incredible young ladies with the world in their hands.  In honor of their birthday today, I thought it only fair to dedicate today’s article to them!

Without them, I may have never taken the plunge to start my own business.

I did NOT want to be that dad that hated what he did for a living… so I quit my sales job and started my own business.

Best thing I ever did for myself… and for them.

Below these pictures of my angels are 2 articles you will enjoy.

My daughters... my world
My daughters… my world

The day those 2 came into my life was the greatest day I can ever remember.

Katrina and Hailey were born 2 months premature and weighed in at 3pds each.

Yet, they carried the power of the universe in those tiny little hands. The first time I held one I will never forget (look at your hands when I talk about this to get the full impression) – their entire hands wrapped around my middle fingertip – their entire hand wrapped around my first knuckle.

So small, yet so many miracles at work within them.

They are now 12 years old and you would never know they were born so small or frail.

The power of love, nutrition and all the TLC possible brought them from where they were all bundled up in their incubators at the hospital to where they are today – terrorizing the cats, the neighbors kids and the local supply of purple balloons (one of their favorites).

Pretty well through most of this time I was also building my own small business and I quickly learned how many similarities there are to raising kids as there are to raising a business. You have to learn to crawl before walking, and walking before running.

There are no shortcuts (every once in a while you do hear of someone that broke the “rules” but it is more common than not to have to follow the rules.

Being twins, they also have some unique qualities and situations that remind me of marketing my business. Making my business different than others is very important to me and I am always working on new ways to get better at it.

What struck me most though was how powerful we truly are when we look to a higher power for help. Those tiny little 3 pound babies were put on this earth for a reason (and neither of us have twins in the family, so it was a complete surprise).

They are as strong as any other 12 year old, yet they started out at a serious disadvantage.

When you look to a higher power for help – you will receive what you ask for. As long as you trust and believe that it will come. When those 2 were born – all I asked for was health.

As long as they were healthy – I was happy.

And I got what I asked for because I KNEW deep inside that they were healthy – and would continue to be so.

With my business, I have asked for help numerous times. Many times I got what I asked for. Other times I didn’t. When I look back on why some things didn’t happen as I had asked for – it was mainly because I was not trusting that it would happen. Those times when I knew deep to the core that it would happen – it did.

My advice to you is – when you ask for help – believe they will help and trust that it will come in due time. But, do not sit back and wait for it. Go out and actively go in search of your dreams as well.

It gives the universe many more outlets to help you with when you are already helping yourself.

NO MORE JAY ABRAHAM!

(this is an article I sent to Jay Abraham almost 10 years ago – one which he published in his newsletter at the time…. thought you’d get a kick out of it.

“No More Jay Abraham!”

as stated by Hailey White (2 years old)

December 2002 in LA was one of the defining moments in my life.  Over the period of 3 information packed days my thoughts on business and success dramatically.  When I got home I looked at the thousands of pages of information I had to read, 80 hours + in audio tapes to listen to…my year was filling up!

So… every chance I had to listen to the tapes I did.

Until last week…

I have twin 2 year old girls and they were on the fast track to be the youngest Jay Abraham Protégés ever !  They listened to the tapes every time they were in the car with me… and for the most part they seemed to quite enjoy it!

I thought I was a genius… raising marketing masterminds from birth!  By the time they were 12 years old I would be able to retire on their consulting contracts.  This was sounding great.

My dreams were dashed the other day when I was putting in another tape while the girls were in the car.   As the tape started there was a huge outburst from the back …. “NO more Jay Abraham!”  Hailey screamed.  I thought she was kidding, I mean how could she be getting tired of here education already?

Well, sorry to say… they no longer let me play the Jay Abraham tapes when they are in the car.  I get the same, very rude, outburst whenever I try them on the tapes.

My bubble has temporarily burst for the youngest protégés ever.

I am going to try again when they turn 3.

Thanks again Jay,  the training is excellent !

Have a great day.

Can firing clients help you live longer?

The late, great Gary Halbert used to love wearing ball caps that said CLIENTS SUCK on them.

Offensive?

I’m sure many a thin-skinned folk would be offended.

The people who paid Gary a couple thousand dollars to watch him beat up on clients, while laying out the foundation for successful marketing…

…they didn’t care.

All they cared about was the wisdom shared… and their ability to IMPLEMENT that wisdom as soon as they could.

Anyone in the entrepreneurial or sales space can probably relate to this next statement…

…not all clients ARE good clients.

Many of them DO suck.

So you need to run like the wind when they show up.

Or just tell them to piss off.

Depends on your personality.

For many years I took on almost every copywriting project that came my way.

If they had money to invest in copy and marketing… I would help them.

I wrote for: authors, speakers, infopreneurs, dog trainers, horse trainers, massage therapists, time travellers (don’t ask : ), spiritualists, Amish craftsmen, weightlifters, martial artists, coaches, health consultants and suppliers, drug pedlars, computer companies, software, roller coaster test pilots (true!), painters, realtors, mortgage brokers, network marketers… you name it… I probably wrote for them.

I love the writing process and learning about new things!

But in 2008, something changed.

Maybe it’s just me… but it seemed like clients became 100 TIMES more difficult to deal with.

Granted, my patience was wearing thin… copywriting rates were more challenging to get… and I was sick and tired of pain in the ass copy jobs.

My biggest pet peeve?

Someone hires me to write copy and give marketing direction.

They need help, right?

So I do what they pay me for…

…and they INSTANTLY become a world class wordsmith and marketing expert that now knows FAR more than me.

The copy is wrong.

The headline is wrong.

That won’t work with these kind of buyers.

Myyyyyyy business is different.

Without even testing it… they just know it won’t work.

Despite them paying someone who has well over 10,000 hours invested in learning a specialized craft.

So we banter back and forth.

Troy gets pissed off.

We part on bad terms.

Gladly this didn’t happen all the time… but often enough to take YEARS off my life!

Now… I don’t even bother taking on the projects.

As you could probably guess… I am using my copy to promote things that pay me directly for my effort.  And pay well they must and do.

What I am doing with Empower and Marketing Beach Bum is my big focus right now (https://www.marketingbeachbum.com)… but I am still sharing my ideas and success with marketing and copywriting here in my blog and newsletter.

Just last week I got an email from a person who wanted copy done.

A distinguished expert with all kinds of accreditation and praise for their expertise.

They had written a quarter page newspaper ad… and it bombed.

So they wanted to hire a specialist.

I was one of the people they contacted.

I sent over some sample ads close to what they wanted done.

Not good enough they said.

They wanted one almost EXACT to their business.

So I sent the closest I had.

Ok, thats good… now send me names, phone numbers, addresses, emails, and the names of the first borns of my testimonials.

No, I said.

Here are my testimonials right here (pointing them to the testimonials section that is prominently displayed on https://www.troysblog.com)

Not good enough… I need to talk to those SAME people who wrote the testimonials.

Which is frankly where I told him to take a hike.

As I hope you would too.

Look… there are people out there that think as soon as they hand you $20… they OWN YOU.

They don’t.

Even if it’s $20,000.

This was a small project.  And this client was destined to be a royal pain in the ass to work with.

Imagine how difficult he would be if he was already driving me nuts!

Been there. Done that. Not taking on those clients for all the money out there.

Just not worth my sanity, my health… and my income.

Those ones drag you down, beat the crap out of your self-confidence… and kill your productivity.

So get some thick skin and just walk away.

Most ‘buyers’ are completely dumbfounded when they discover you won’t take their money.

Their egos start inflating and they can get downright ugly.

Even more reason to tell them to take a leap.

This is SO invigorating!

Next time someone is being a pain in the ass… fire them.

Donald Trump has it right…. “YOU’RE FIRED!” carries a lot of power and feels DAMN good to say.

It will free you from difficult clients and time-sucking tasks.

So you can move on to things you DO enjoy!

Now is not the time to crater to everyone willing to hand you money.

Now is the time to find your true passion… inject your personal stories into that passion… and make yourself a business model that YOU LOVE.

Have a great day.
